Welcome to DAMHA
Thank you for your interest in Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association (DAMHA). We are excited to share more about our organisation and the vital roles available on our Board.
DAMHA has a rich history of providing quality housing and support to retired mineworkers and their families. Our core area of operation is the former County Durham coalfield, which comprises the former districts of Chester-le-Street, Durham, Derwentside, Easington, Gateshead, Sedgefield, South Tyneside, Sunderland, and Wear Valley. Our commitment to enhancing the lives of our residents is reflected in our continuous efforts to improve our services and homes. We are proud of our heritage and the positive impact we have on the community.
DAMHA is embarking on exciting initiatives, including developing new properties and enhancing our IT infrastructure. We are focused on sustainability, aiming to build an average of ten new homes per year while meeting our net-zero goals. Additionally, we are improving our data management and exploring the potential of AI to enhance our services.
As a Trustee, you will play a crucial role in guiding DAMHA’s strategic direction and ensuring we meet our goals. We are currently undertaking an independent governance review which will guide the Board in its aim to continually improve its governance. We have reviewed and updated our skills matrix, and through our succession plan, we have identified the need to strengthen the following areas:
- Finance, business planning and risk management experience preferably gained in the social housing sector. This new member would join our Audit and Risk Committee, potentially becoming the next Committee Chair in 2026
- Corporate governance in a regulated sector
- Housing management ideally gained in the social housing sector
- Customer services (including complaints)
IT, data management, cyber security and AI – knowledge, experience and understanding of the risks and rewards. In addition to this expertise, diversity of thought is a key consideration for us, we therefore welcome applications from people with out-of-sector experience for some positions. We are also seeking to attract a mixture of experienced and first-time trustees and have a full induction programme in place to support all new trustees.
Joining DAMHA’s Board offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our residents. You will work alongside a dedicated team, contribute to strategic decisions, and help shape the future of our organisation. We value diverse perspectives and are committed to fostering an inclusive environment.
Warm regards,
Anne Rowlands
Chair
