Introduction

The Chair of the Board plays a critical leadership role in ensuring effective governance and high standards of performance and accountability across the organisation. This person specification outlines the skills, knowledge, experience, core and additional competencies, and the enhanced level of commitment required for the Chair role.

The Chair is appointed not only for their strengths in governance, leadership and strategic insight but also for their ability to collaborate, inspire and uphold the organisation’s ethos and values.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

The Chair is expected to bring substantial skills, knowledge, and experience, contributing to the effectiveness of the Board and the wider organisation. These should include:

  • Strategic leadership and understanding of the housing and social sectors.
  • Experience of working at Board or senior executive level.
  • Strong financial and risk acumen, with the ability to interpret complex information.
  • Political awareness and understanding of the external environment.
  • Experience in governance and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Previous Chairing experience is desirable
